1000 Awesome Things!

My lovely sister, Lizzi, bought me this book for my Christmas present and I have found it to be a great pick-me up tool when I’m feeling under the proverbial weather.

It’s a collection of all those wonderful things you may encounter in your daily life that are awesome and wonderful, but that you might not really ever think about.

Such things as:

  • When you arrive at your destination just as a great song ends on the radio
  • Getting served breakfast in bed
  • Finding money you didn’t even know you’d lost
  • Sleeping in new bed sheets
  • and hundreds more!

It all started from a blog idea by a certain Mr. Neil. It is a delightfully positive blog dedicated to making you smile. If you haven’t already, you should definitely check it out: http://1000awesomethings.com/

Here’s a review from the blog:

The Silver Linings

Starting out from scratch is not easy, as we have found. Recently it seems we just can’t catch a break. – Whether it’s the car breaking down for the 6th time, or exorbitant parking fines, or having to borrow even more money to pay our bills, or having to move out of our house suddenly, or our mentally unstable neighbor from Hell waking us up in the middle of the night AGAIN, or being called in to work 12 hour shifts a day, or watching the medical bills pile up, or how little time Jono and I have been able to spend together. Each day is becoming more and more of a struggle.

But…

As I was sitting here and complaining about all of the above and my lot in life, I paused for a moment and thought of what has been going on in the news:

I thought of the 11 people in a passenger van who lost their lives at a stop light, and of the pastor who was falsely accused of sexually harassing his congregation, and of the 19 yr old aspiring model who was fatally hit by a truck as she was crossing the road, and of the hospital patient shot to death by police in the back yard, and of the two journalists in Bangladesh who were found stabbed to death in their home, and of the 3000 city workers that will lose their jobs by the end of the month, and of the many victims of the Concordia cruise ship sinking, and of the hundreds that are dying of the flash freezing temperatures in Europe, and of the thousands of innocent people who have been killed in the protests in Syria …

And I think of my very own friends and loved ones too:

Those who cannot find a job that will support them and their family, and those whose marriages and relationships have crumbled, and those whose children are handicapped and don’t get sufficient healthcare, and those whose relatives hate them and have disowned them, and those whose car was totaled by an irresponsible and crazy driver, and of the one whose accident left him unable to work for three weeks, and those whose parents are ailing and fully depending on them, and the one whose best friend passed away last week from cancer, and those whose house burned down, taking everything they owned in the world with it…

And it’s then that I see that I have so so much to be thankful for:

  • Even though Jono and I see each other less and less these days, I have the endearing love of the most wonderful, caring man in the world, who still tries to make time for me, even though he works like a maniacal dog.
  • Even though I have had to work crazy hours as of late myself, I have a good job that is providing steady income for us to live.
  • Even though we do have to move out of our house, because of our terrible neighbor, at least we have found a suitable new place, and at least she is not coming with us!
  • Even though we have had high medical bills, at least the physiotherapy treatment is working and we are both getting better and better every day. And at least I will soon be getting health benefits to cover every bill.
  • Even though we do have unavoidable parking fines, at least we have a car.
  • Even though we have had to put so much money into the repair of the car, at least it is still running and serving us well.
  • Even though we still owe money in loans, at least we have loved ones who trust us and care enough about us to help us out.

So, yes, starting out from scratch is not easy, but then again, nobody said it would be. We are so thankful for all of our many friends and family members who have lent us a helping hand and a listening ear this past year. We couldn’t have done it without you! For every dark cloud, there are silver linings – even though seemingly hidden at first glance – keeping us sheltered in these tough times.

Thank the Lord for all of our many blessings!

I hope you’re making the time to count yours too.

Breaky at Woodlands

We went over to Woodlands right before Lisa left, to say goodbye. Aw, we miss you, Lise! :(

We had a delicious breakfast prepared by many skilled hands. I thought it best to skip on lending a helping hand, as I was jetlagging and seeing double, and who knows how that might have turned out…

Anyways, it was delish (“but also nutrish,” as Critter would say…) beyond all belief! There’s nothing like a good hearty breakfast shared among long lost friends. :)

Taiwan Pics 04

Here’s another batch of pics from Taiwan, mostly of going-away parties, and barbecues. It seems we can’t get enough…

Hiatus…and Happy Birthday!

Oh Lordie Lord! After the last six days, I physically feel 40 years older and 25 years dumber! Don’t even ask. I just thank God that it’s over with and I can take a small break. :)

Anyways…!

We musn’t forget our dear Leo friendlies this month. Happy birthday to the whole lot of you. In truth, I know far too many Leos to honor properly here, not to mention that I am also far too tired. (I kinda want to curl up and sleep until Jesus comes back, to give you an idea.) But, I have to say that the world would not be the same without any of you, and I’m blessed to know you.

And some of you in particular are just extra special! ;) You know who you are. (Hint: You own large pieces of real estate in my heart!)

Happy Birthday Leos! :)

Thank you for being so bold and beautiful!

So, I finally got my hair done! Yay. God bless my stylist, Terry, he’s such a jewel. He cried a bit at the sorry state of my hair, but soon got the victory and helped to transform me! Thank the Lord. It’s so much easier to take care of again. (Not that any of you care much about that…)

We’ve been enjoying a few days break, with time to rest, go to the beach and visit with old friends! Cat came up to see us, which touched our tiny hearts. So nice to see you again, Catarina! I mean that. :) And Chelle finally arrived as well. I only got to see her for an hour or so, but it had a strange and comforting effect on me. Sigh. The world makes sense again. I love you, Chelle!

We were also invited to a small BB-gun BBQ, the first of its kind. It sounds weird because it is weird. But it’s also a heck of a lot of fun. I think my new true passion is shooting… :P Look out, world! Mei deleted off of Phil’s camera the only photo of me shooting, and so spent the rest of the evening trying to make it up to him. Quite humorous attempts, ha ha.

Anyhoo, here are the photos! I apologize again for the bad quality. One day, not too far away, I shall get me an awesome SLR, but until then, these will have to do:

I just wanted to say…

that I miss you terribly…

But, you already knew that. :)

I’ve been having lots of fun, but everything is more fun when you’re around! Can’t wait to see you again! I’m counting the days, and I don’t care if Mia thinks it’s corny. I love you so much!

P.S. I hope you miss me too! – Even just a little bit…? :P

Here are some more pics from the last few weeks in Taiwan:

We went to this beautiful mountain town called JiuFen and had such a gorgeous view for a few days. It’s a real touristy spot, with Japanese historical buildings and temples. Mei and I went into this old Japanese house on a tour. Most of the rooms were too fragile to enter, but it was all very cute to look at. They wouldn’t let you turn your flash on either, so some of the pics are rather fuzzy. My apologies. :)

We’ve been visiting old friends, and of course that’s always a lovely thing to do. Everyone is so grown up now, sometimes I feel very out of place. Ha!

First Week in Taiwan

Here I sit, melting on the surface of the sun. It is a literal sauna all around me. I see you nodding your heads sympathetically thinking, “Yes, yes, I know how you feel.” NO! You do not! You have NO idea whatsoever, unless of course you happen to be Mia, who is sitting next to me at her laptop. In that case, fine. I see you’re dripping with sweat as well…

I do not fathom how it is possible that I lived here for 7 summers in a row, and I’m still prosperously round, alive and kicking! I guess there are some things that you conveniently forget. Unless I should believe what the locals are saying, that the weather has actually gotten hotter and hotter every year.

Sheesh…

Well, I’ve been here a week now. Delta finally got ahold of my luggage (and their brains) and sent it yesterday morning. I’ve been walking around in borrowed clothes and shoes since arriving. I’ve never lost my luggage before on a flight, and I was quite distraught. I think it actually ruined my first week here.

Well, that and the fact that Brazil and Germany were beaten at their best game. This whole World Cup deal has been quite sad. I was so shocked that I couldn’t speak.

Or that could have also been because I’ve lost my voice somewhere between here and DouLiu down south. I’ve been shouting at the top of my lungs to a deaf audience of students. The poor sweethearts, they finally came through, when given their time to shine. I taught them a funky dance to “It’s My Life/Confessions”, by the Glee Cast, for the Closing Ceremony auditions. And we were chosen to represent! They were amazing!

You know who else has been amazing? Philip Walter. That man is a jewel. Thank you so much, Phil for all you’ve done for me. I’ve been so lost since coming back, and you’ve been there every time I’ve needed help. Thank you a million times and more!

But…sigh. I miss you, Toronto!

- And especially you, my love.

Worst Ever

I know you won’t believe me, but I actually went through the worst hell ever at my dentist appointment yesterday. When he cleaned my teeth, it sounded like the scraping of 1,000 steel forks against glass plates, as he carved out my gums with his torture tools! It was all I could do to keep myself from jumping up, smacking him square across the face, and saying, “You! None of that!” Thank God I didn’t, and survived. He really is a sweet, nice man, after all. God bless him.

*End of testimony for the day*
